All was well when suddenly Mrs. Noon swooped briskly into the office escorting a small, upset kindergarten child by his arm. As I glanced up, she began blurting out, “This child has diarrhea,” which was quite obvious as the discharge oozed out from beneath his pant leg, swirled over his shoe top, and headed for the floor. It was time for crisis intervention. We had several concurring problems: a sick child, an upset teacher, and a clean up. I summoned the secretary and requested that she bring me a large garbage bag from the supply closet and contact the parents immediately. The secretary quickly got the bag, handed it to me, and went about the business of trying to make the necessary call. With the bag firmly in hand, I approached the child and he began to scream, “Don’t put me in the garbage!” I was jolted suddenly into reality. I had not shared my intentions with the child, and he stopped fretting over his predicament long enough to express his perceptions of what was happening. I gently placed my hand on his small shoulder and reassured him that he was not going to be thrown into the garbage. To quickly send the message of what I needed for him to do, I decided to demonstrate the behavior that I wanted him to mimic. I stepped into the bag and slightly pulled it up toward the waist and explained how it could be used to make him feel more comfortable until his parents came to take him home. The father of the child arrived, signed little Donnie out, picked him up with bag, and started walking down the street toward their home. Once the child had received the necessary attention, the other problems were easily resolved.
